Who is she?

Yvonne Wagener was born on 16 May 1931 in Esch/Alzette. At the age of 14 she became a gymnast. "I always wanted to become a gymnast, but my mother was against it. In the end I succeeded in making a name for myself. The young girl met her future husband Josy Stoffel at an early stage during training sessions at the boys' school in Differdange. The boys of the gymnastics club "Espérance Differdange" and the girls of "Avenir Differdange" trained in two rooms of the school. From 1968 to 1978, Yvonne was a sports teacher at the Lycée Ste Sophie in Luxembourg.

In 1953 she married Josy in Differdange. Their son Polo was born in 1955. Yvonne's sporting career took off in 1956. First of all, Yvonne won the title of Luxembourg champion. She then participated twice in the world championships (Rome 1954 and Moscow 1958) and took part in the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960. She was a member of the national gymnastics team for 15 years and then coached the national team for 8 years.

In 2011, Yvonne Stoffel-Wagener, together with her husband, received the Fair Play Award at the Sports Press Gala in Mondorf-les-Bains.

In November 2013, the athlete became the first woman to receive the "Jeannot Kremer Sports Award" for her exemplary sporting life.

The great sportswoman passed away on 5 April 2014.
