## Who is she?

Born on 22 December 1911 in Bettembourg, Maria Christnach, a housewife, became involved in municipal politics. A member of the Social Workers' Party, she was the first woman to be elected to the Bettembourg municipal council in 1970. She served as a local councillor until 1975.

This small woman knew how to make a place for herself among the politicians of her native town. This explains why she returned to the municipal political scene a few years later. From 1982 to 1987, Maria Christnach became the first woman to hold the post of alderman in the municipality of Bettembourg, replacing Lucien Zeimes, who resigned from this post in 1982 and who, in the 1981 municipal elections, had overtaken her by a single vote.  
In the meantime, Maria Christnach married Jean-Pierre Juncker, an employee of Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL). The couple had no children and lived for many years at 13, rue Collart in Bettembourg, above the railway workers' cooperative.

Maria Juncker-Christnach is an outgoing woman who listens to others, is highly regarded as a politician and is considered generous to everyone. Respectfully called "Tatta Maria" by her fellow citizens, she sits, among others, on the Syndicat des Eaux du Sud. She is president of the Cercle des mandolinistes de Bettembourg, president of the Foyer de la Femme and very active in the Amiperas.

A tragedy put an end to her life in September 1988, when Maria Juncker was 77 years old.
